Elmstead is a small but very leafy and pleasant residential suburb in southeast London. Officially recorded for the first time in the early thirteen hundreds, the name Elmstead comes from Old English and basically means ‘a place where elm trees grow’. The elm forest in question, provided a vital supply of timber for many of London’s shipbuilding yards during the twelfth and thirteenth century. By the seventeen hundreds, apparently there was a manor house in Elmstead, the local gazette reported its name as Emsted Place, within the Hemsted hamlet. About a century later, the railways had finally arrived in Elmstead. The local station was the last one to open on the St Johns to Chislehurst line. Initially the station was named Elmstead Wood in order to attract day-trippers for a local outing.
